Diving Bell Relaunched

On Tuesday night the Diving Bell, located on Sir John Rogerson's Quay, was formally re-opened as a tourist attraction by Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Paschal Donohoe. The diving bell is a fantastic example of engineering, designed by Bindon Blood Stoney, to facilitate the construction of the Liffey Quay Walls and other port facilities in the area. The diving bell allowed up to 6 men to work on the sea/river bed and stands at 13 meters tall.
The restoration project was funded by the Dublin Port Company who officially opened the diving bell as a new visitor attraction on Sir John Rogerson’s Quay following a four-month restoration project. The bell itself was originally saved from being scrapped by members of the local community and St. Andrew's Resource Centre. The centre researched and published a small book on the history of the bell and its importance for the local community. Copies of the publication can be inspected at St. Andrew's Resource Centre.
It is hoped that the newly rejuvinated diving bell, which incorporates a historical display in its re-designed base, will attract tourists and visitors to the quays.
